We will also talk about how you can identify them and address them. Cath Anne: [00:00:59] So, this doesnt have to do with creative writing or writing a letter to your friend. It is strictly academic writing or formal business writing. These tips can apply to that as well. Cath Anne: [00:01:14] So, maybe you have commonly made some mistakes in your papers and youre looking to get better grades on them. Dont worry, Im here to help and provide you with a few tips that hopefully will enhance your academic writing. Were going to get into some real specifics around this, so Im really excited share with you. Cath Anne: [00:01:36] Tip number 1: dont use contractions. Now, what are contractions? Again, this is for academic writing. Contractions are words like dont, cant, shouldnt, couldnt, wouldnt, isnt, havent and hasnt. Cath Anne: [00:01:55] These are the shorter forms of words like do not, cannot, could not, would not, should not, is not, have not, and has not. Cath Anne: [00:02:07] It is better to write out the word in full within your academic paper or in your business writing because it just looks more professional. Notice how for example with cannot. It is one word is can it condensed into cannot. Whereas, if you write do not it still remains as two separate words. So thats important to know when you are expanding contractions. This is a really important one because its something that can slip your mind when youre writing an actual paper. Its important to be attentive to using contractions through your paper. Always make sure that you go over your paper before you hand it in and make sure that you are not using contractions. It makes your writing seem a little bit too colloquial. Expand those words and sound more professional. Cath Anne: [00:03:23] Tip number two is to avoid: there are or there is. This might seem like a strange one but let me explain. Why do we avoid there are or there is when we write? We dont want our sentences to be too wordy or convoluted. We want our sentences to be concise and to the point. So, we use there are it adds extra words that dont need to be there. Theyre redundant. So, let me give you a couple of examples of this. There are many issues that politicians face daily. So, thats adding a time and more words to your point. You dont need there are at the beginning of this sentence. Instead you could just write, Politicians face many issues on a daily basis. This sentence is much simpler and to the point. Cath Anne: [00:04:30] Lets do another example, There are many developments that the U.N. supports. So, again we have there are at the beginning of the sentence. We dont need that kind of clutter in the sentence. We would much rather say, The U.N. supports many developments. So, as you can see, shortening those sentences and making them much more concise is better. That is going to get you more points in your essay. Cath Anne: [00:05:06] Number three is: avoid words like really, very, a lot, and so. The reason for this is that it weakens your writing when youre using these words. You do not need to use these words It makes it come across as a little bit more immature. They dont add anything to your writing. So, lets look at an example, Many people think cooking is very hard. Cath Anne: [00:06:07] Instead of using the words very hard you can change it to something else. Maybe the word difficult. So, lets say, Many people think cooking is difficult. It strengthens the sentence. A second example, Trumps presidency is really controversial. If you want this sentence to be a bit stronger take the word really out because the word controversial stands alone. It is a strong word in and of itself. So, to strengthen that sentence you will go on to say, Trumps presidency is controversial. Lets do another example, A lot of the boys like to play soccer. Cath Anne: [00:07:03] The word a lot weakens the sentence. Instead of a lot we can use many. Many of the boys like to play soccer. Cath Anne: [00:07:15] We can use many because the boys is countable or plural. Cath Anne: [00:07:52] Tip number four: passive voice versus active voice. Admittedly, this is probably one of my weakest points that I experienced when I was in undergrad. I always wrote in the passive voice. I found it really hard to write in the active voice. Sometimes its something that I continue to have to work on. Cath Anne: [00:08:21] I wanted to make mention first that if you are studying sciences or youre in the science disciplines you can use the passive voice. There are reports that are written in the passive voice so its okay to use a passive voice on occasion. Cath Anne: [00:08:43] If youre studying the humanities, sociology, English, history, philosophy, psychology, or any of those subjects you must use the active voice. That is an essential in academic writing in the humanities. Lets talk about the differences between passive voice and active voice. We will use an example to do this. For example, Immigration reforms were implemented by Trudeau. That sentence is written in the passive voice. Here we have the past tense of the verb to be. So, we have were and we also have the past participle of the verb to implement so, implemented. Then we also have the word by which is usually something that indicates that we are speaking in the passive voice. As you can see its just not a very strong sentence. It takes away from what Trudeau has done; it doesnt put him up front and center within the sentence. Cath Anne: [00:09:57] We want the sentence to be a lot stronger and straight forward. The sentence would be much stronger if it was written as, Trudeau implemented immigration reforms. This strengthens the message of the sentence. As opposed to, Immigration reforms were implemented by Trudeau. We now hear a much stronger message which is, Trudeau implemented immigration reform. Cath Anne: [00:10:37] We are finally at our last tip. Tip number five. It goes along with the rest of the tips which is: use strong verbs. There is a difference between strong verbs and weak verbs. Lets do another example. A weak verb is, He gave assistance to my friend. So, here were using the word gave with the noun assistance. As you can see, the word assistance can be actually used as a verb. So a stronger way to say this would be, He assisted my friend. Its much more direct. The difference between these two sentences is that the word assistance in the first sentence is a noun. Cath Anne: [00:12:00] That is it for this week. I hope that this session was of benefit. Reaction #9 Example Reaction #9 – Assignment Example Aspects of Emotions Various psychologists have developed different models that try to explain the process of emotional feelings. The phenomenon one, according to Bryant, (2009), is the pinwheel model. The pinwheel model has been developed to assist individuals in understanding different aspects of emotions. The model has been designed as a spin wheel since each aspect of emotion is preceded by another. Aspects of emotion involve a process that starts with experiencing emotions followed by sending emotions and then receiving emotions. This article looks at the three stages of emotions, how it starts until other people are able to perceive that a person has emotional feelings.Experiencing emotion takes place when a person identifies his or her own feelings. In this case, individuals try to control the amount of feeling to avoid expressing the same to other people. For example, when a person is burning with guilt, he is experiencing an emotional feeling. Fundamentally, a person experien ces emotional feeling that can be termed as temperament. Since emotions can lead to poor judgment, it is important for a person experiencing emotional imbalances to seek professional cancelling. Experiencing emotion is always proceeded by sending emotional signal.Sending emotional signals happens when a person expresses emotions in a manner that is appropriate in a given situation. After the signal is sent, another person receives it. Receiving emotions occurs when the second person is able to notice the emotions expressed by the first person. After noticing the expression, it is significant to understand and show concern to the person’s emotional feeling. A good example of sending and receiving emotional feeling is when you wrongly interpret someone as hostile, and hence fear overwhelms you (emotions). Understanding the aspects of emotion has changed my perspective concerning emotions. In fact, I am equipped with information on how to handle emotional feelings and preventing them from disintegrating to a level that can hurt other people. Panama Canal - History and Overview The 48 mile-long (77 km) international waterway known as the Panama Canal allows ships to pass between the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean, saving about 8000 miles (12,875 km) from a journey around the southern tip of South America, Cape Horn. History of the Panama Canal The new Panamanian government authorized French businessman Philippe Bunau-Varilla, to negotiate a treaty with the United States. The Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty allowed the U.S. to build the Panama Canal and provided for perpetual control of a zone five-miles wide on either side of the canal. Although the French had attempted construction of a canal in the 1880s, the Panama Canal was successfully built from 1904 to 1914. Once the canal was complete the U.S. held a swath of land running the approximately 50 miles across the isthmus of Panama. The division of the country of Panama into two parts by the U.S. territory of the Canal Zone caused tension throughout the twentieth century. Additionally, the self-contained Canal Zone (the official name for the U.S. territory in Panama) contributed little to the Panamanian economy. The residents of the Canal Zone were primarily U.S. citizens and West Indians who worked in the Zone and on the canal. Anger flared in the 1960s and led to anti-American riots. The U.S. and Panamanian governments began to work together to solve the territorial issue. In 1977, U.S. President Jimmy Carter signed a treaty which agreed to return 60% of the Canal Zone to Panama in 1979. The canal and remaining territory, known as the Canal Area, was returned to Panama at noon (local Panama time) on December 31, 1999. Additionally, from 1979 to 1999, a bi-national transitional Panama Canal Commission ran the canal, with an American leader for the first decade and a Panamanian administrator for the second. The transition at the end of 1999 was very smooth, for over 90% of the canal employees were Panamanian by 1996. The 1977 treaty established the canal as a neutral international waterway and even in times of war any vessel is guaranteed safe passage. After the 1999 hand-over, the U.S. and Panama jointly shared duties in defending the canal. Operation of the Panama Canal It takes approximately fifteen hours to traverse the canal through its three sets of locks (about half the time is spent waiting due to traffic). Ships passing through the canal from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean actually move from the northwest to the southeast, due to the east-west orientation of the Isthmus of Panama. Panama Canal Expansion In September, 2007 work began on a $5.2 billion project to expand the Panama Canal. Expected to be complete in 2014, the Panama Canal expansion project will allow ships double the size of current Panamax to pass through the canal, dramatically increasing the amount of goods that can pass through the canal.

The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Angel Network, and Oprah’s Book Club have been some of the most indoctrinating pieces of work by Oprah. Moreover, these creations have been the ultimate techniques Oprah has used to reach out to the people of the world. Oprah Winfrey, one of the most influential, dynamic, and powerful women of today’s society, has devoted her life’s works to influencing the people of the world. Millions of viewers tune in daily to be educated, entertained, or simply enlivened by Oprah as she visits them in the company of their own home. Red Hunting Hat Essay

What does symbolism add to a book? It adds morals and depth to the novel. It makes the reader learn something interesting or lets them gain knowledge of something that can change their outlook on how they perceive things. In the novel Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, it is about a perplexed boy, Holden Caulfield. He has trouble dealing the issue of growing up. One of the major symbols in the book is Holden’s red hunting hat. Salinger uses the hat to signify Holden’s need for comfort and his adolescent problems and pressures. To begin, when reading the novel one seems to come upon Holden‘s red hunting hat many times while reading. This hunting hat demonstrates Holden’s need for safety and comfort. He was deprived of it when he was a child; for nobody ever asked him how he felt about his younger brother death and his moving to different schools. The assurance one object can create is immense and that’s exactly what it did for Holden. Holden decides to leave Pencey early and heads to New York City. In cab he puts on his hat and says â€Å"I’d put on my red hunting hat when I was in the cab, just for the hell of it, but I took it off before I checked in† (61). This quote illustrates how Holden feels the need to wear the hat in order to feel safe. He was out in New York City with nowhere to turn too and he had no place to go where he would feel welcomed. The hat seemed to give him a sense of ease, but with that comfort there is a price to pay because he also felt insecure about how people will perceive him while wearing the hat. the red hunting hat is Holden’s desire to be unique and keep his individuality. Not many people will walk down the street wearing a red hunting hat, especially the way Holden wears it. Holden always wore the hat a certain way. â€Å"I put my red hunting hat on, and turned the peak around to the back, the way I like it†¦ † (52). Holden always put his hat on this way, showing he is clearly different from the world. Usually when Holden is wearing his hat he tends to reject people, or has just previously rejected them. Subsequently, the hat also gives Holden insecurity that seems to cause him pressures that one usually obtains during teenage years. But at time his pressure seemed to be a little extreme. My ears were nice and warm, though. That hat I bought had earlaps in it, and I put them on – I don’t give a damn how I looked. Nobody was around anyway. Everybody was in the sack† (53). This quote exemplifies how Holden tends to take his image to seriously. Yet throughout the novel Holden says that people that are obsessed with their look are phony, showing the reader that at time he is a hypocrite considering he’s obsessed with his look also. Not only does this happen once or twice but numerous times in the book. The quote tries to explain that Holden does not care what people think about him and yet if he did not he would not have announced that everyone was sleeping and nobody could see him. When Stradlater gets home from his date with Jane Gallagher, he and Holden get in a fight. When it is over, both Holden and Stradlater are left in physical pain. â€Å"I kept sitting there on the floor till I heard old Stradlater close the door and go down the corridor to the can, then I got up. I couldn’t find my goddam hunting hat anywhere. Finally I found it†¦ I put it on, and turned the old peak around to the back, the way I liked it† (45). The fight that Holden has with Stradlater is about Stradlater going out on a date with Holden’s friend Jane Gallagher. Holden gets upset with Stradlater for doing that because he thinks that Stradlater will cause Jane to lose her innocence. After Holden puts his hat on he stops thinking about Jane’s innocence and about his face, a more rational, less emotional subject. This also verifies a very apparent fact Holden seems to not be able up make up his mind on great number of things He seems to find himself in a confused mess.

In this report, we will take a look at how the Company has succeeded in growing into the media corporation it is today. A Look into the Company’s History The Walt Disney Company was first founded in 1923 by Walt and Roy Disney (Wasko, 2011).
